Topic: Lawrence Lamay info

I am wondering about the background of Lawrence Lamay. When did he start making basses and where did he reside and work other than Kentucky? I have heard that he was self taught.
Did he make any basses before 1950?

Thanks!

His first bass was made for me in 1967. He was then living in Madison, Wisconsin where he had a string instrument repair shop. He was born in Kentucky and eventually moved back there with his wife. He was indeed self taught and had a special gift as a woodcarver. He worked his knife as a virtuoso player works his bow. I always loved to watch him work.

Thank you for your reply, sorry for not getting back to you sooner. I am doing a document on North American bass makers, and this is very helpful.
Thanks again,
