Topic: Spicatto Technique

Hello Mr. Karr,

One quick question on your spicatto technique, which I know is probably impossible to teach. Does your bow ever even leave the string to reach the other side of the string, or does the bow stop and the wrist direction change slightly? Or are both of these off?

Yes, the bow leaves the string, but the secret of a good spiccato is in the amount of bow length that you use. Because spiccato requires an infinitesimal bow length the sideward motion in changing direction of the arm, elbow and wrist is negligible.
