Dear Bryan,

Alec Wilder was one of the first composers to write for me. In fact, for my debut recital in NY in the early 60s, I debuted his Sonata for bass and piano. He was given my first record for Golden Crest Records (now rereleased on Cisco) and upon hearing it he felt compelled to create a composition just for me. Later, I began working with Frederick Hand and when Wilder got wind of this he wrote the piece for bass and guitar. The tuba/bass Sonata was written for Harvey Phillips and me. The timbre of the two instruments did not blend well together so I never performed or recorded the piece. For my last concert in celebration of my retirement in 2001 I played two movements from the Wilder Suite for piano and bass. I spent a lot of time with the composer and not only did I love his music, but I greatly admired his intellect and philosophy.
